Am-Can Adventures - Day 2 The Drive to Raleigh

We set off from the hotel for Raleigh North Carolina knowing that there had already been some snow across North Carolina and that more was forecast across South Carolina and North Carolina that day but we're intrepid and a little snow won't stop us, right?

The first stop however was just a little hop down the road to the North Point Mall for breakfast and a visit to Hot Topic. Catherine has always wanted to go to Hot Topic and Alan had already scoped out the place and discovered some Tokio Hotel goodies. She bought a T-Shirt, a necklace, some bracelets and some new tongue piercings. We ate breakfast (brunch) at Chick-Fil-A on the first stop of our culinary tour of America and then hit the Interstate.

Lunch at The Waffle House - I had hash browns which are a much looser and more home-made affair than the compressed and processed ones you get in the UK.

Just one of the few big rigs we saw on our journey

Ice anyone?
We stopped off at a gas station to find some screen wash (the car had none when we set off) and hope to find an ice-scraper but they had none. The screen wash worked a treat once we'd connected the line that was apart.

Trucks parked up at the gas station, the road surface was treacherously slippery here following a previous ice & snow storm although the highways had been gritted and they were clear.

Welcome to North Carolina - third state of our tour (I missed the Welcome to South Carolina sign)

Conditions worsened as fresh snow started to fall, though this didn't slow down the transports that hurtled past us at 60mph. Road markings were starting to disappear under a coat of fresh snow.

At one point we hit a rut and skidded off the road into a snow drift. Fortunately for us some locals with a huge Ford pick-up had some chains and a friendly local policeman stopped traffic on two lanes so they were able to pull us out, two people even arrived from a local hotel across the highway to push us out. Thumbs up to the Police and people of Archdale NC! The lights directly in front of our car were those of the pick up truck turned to face us for the tow out. You can see another car hurtling past on the right lane of the Interstate - at this point the Interstate was completely covered.

Finally we arrived at the Motel 6 in Cary, too late to see Kristin as planned so we decided to call in the next morning before heading off to Washington DC.
